One of the teams was sponsored by Peter Haggis, the other by his son Paul. Robert Welch, Sr and Ivy Irene Kemp had five children: Joan (Smith), Robert George, Mabel (Michaud), Lawrence Edward and Fred. The Haggis name was originally Hautzakos. Pete Haggis was a cafe owner in his native Greece. He owned the Ritz Cafeteria in Guelph, Ont from 1927 to 1932 before coming to Port Hope c1934. He owned the Royal Grill restaurant and the Haggis Bowling Academy. His mother Helen is buried with him in Union Cemetery. Peter Haggis had a son and a daughter Paul Apostle Haggis 1897-1969, brother of Peter, once owned the St Lawrence Hotel and the building on the southwest corner of Walton and Queen streets. He and Gladys Victoria Howard 1902-1976, who was born in Port Hope, were married in Toronto April 2, 1923. They are buried in Belleville, Ont. |
