After the opening of school in the middle of September, practice commenced for the Girls' Interform Basketball Competition. This event took place earlier than usual on account of the postponement of Field Day. XIB came out triumphant, closely followed by XIII form and XIA.
In November interschool basketball practice started. Many students attended these practices regularly showing keen interest and great enthusiasm for this sport.
Our Christmas holidays passed and another promising year confronted us again. The schedule for the Interschool Competition was drawn up. It included three schools, Bowmanville, Cobourg and Port Hope. Then our teams were chosen, the Junior team including Peggy O'Neill, Betty O'Neill, Doris Jennings, Margaret Kearns as forwards with Eva Rowden, (captain), June Robinson, Helen Brown, Margaret Sheehan, and Margotte Fair as guards. The Senior team had Mary Kearns, (captain), Frances Stalter, Jacqueline Rosevear, Elizabeth Brown and Ruth Sweanor as forwards, with Kathleen O'Connor, Dorothy Dodd, Fern Hodgson and Loretta Smith as guards.
On January 24, Bowmanville played in Port Hope. This first scheduled game was won by a score of 16-8 by Port Hope Junior Girls' Team in a clean fast game. The two Senior teams were engaged furiously in a hard fought battle which ended in a tie 16-16.
On February 7, the Port Hope teams journeyed to Cobourg. The Junior girls were defeated 18-9. The Senior team struggled hard, the result finally being in favour of Cobourg. This game was soon forgotten when on February 13, Cobourg met Port Hope in Port Hope. The Senior team gained the victory defeating Cobourg 12-9, while the Junior Girls lost 21-14.
On February 21, Port Hope travelled to Bowmanville to play the last game on the schedule. The Junior girls won their first victory away from home, the score being 16-11. The Senior girls were defeated by a score of 23-13.
This completed the interschool Basketball schedule for another year.
Although we were not quite successful this year, the future still remains bright in this field. Next year, new players along with the experienced ones should push ahead to victory. Good luck anyway for the next year!
