Field Day Champions
Six records were broken at PHHS Field Day, September 23, 1959. Two new records were established in the boys' events and four in the girls'.
Burney Skitch, Grade 13, bettered by two inches a pole vault of 9 feet 7 inches, made by George Brackenbury in 1934. Sanford Haskill's running broad jump record, 16 feet 4 inches, fell to the 17 feet 4 inch jump of Michael Greenaway, Grade 9B.
The track was in perfect condition for Pat Hope, Grade 13, when she reduced the time of the Senior Girls' 75 yard dash by .4 seconds. The previous record was set in 1954 by Pat Scully with a time of 10 seconds flat.
Two new Intermediate Girls' records were set by Anne Kelly, Grade 12B. Ann out jumped Dawn Johnson's 1957, 4 foot 2 inch high jump by one inch, re-setting the record at 4 feet 3 inches. In the Volleyball Serve for Distance, Anne served 103 feet and 9 inches to beat S Thompson's 1953 record of 102 feet 2 inches.
The sixth upset of the day was Marjorie Stewart's Junior Girls' Softball Throw for Distance. Marjorie, Grade 10D, threw the ball 154 feet 9 inches, 18 feet 10 inches further than Carol Caswell who set the previous record in 1937.
The open mile and the boys' and girls' intergrade running and passball relays completed the events of Field Day, 1959. Ron Cameron, Grade 12B, endured and won the open mile in 5 minutes 56.4 seconds. Both the boys' intergrade running and passball relays were won by Grade 13.
